The Department of English Language and Literature held its annual Writing Workshop between 10 am and 3:30 pm on 7 December to underscore the importance of academic integrity and the different writing conventions in the students’ fields of learning. Rachel Back and Judith Yoel started the workshop, respectively with a presentation on academic integrity to first- and second-year students and with a session on linguistic analysis with third- and fourth-year students. Then Rachel took first-year students, Danielle Schaub second-year students and Judith third- and fourth-year students for a session on citation rules for literature and linguistics/education; eager not to err, the students asked many questions regarding the various rules and their particularities. The groups remained with the same teachers to work on thesis statements, quoting and paraphrasing; the students engaged in an animated discussion on the in/appropriateness of several thesis statements and then focussed on ethical ways of quoting and paraphrasing, again with an intentness showing their desire to avoid plagiarism at all cost. For the last session, Rachel first went on working with first-year students while Judith explained to the rest of the students how to write a paper in linguistics. First-year students returned when Danielle started explaining how to write a paper in literature. Rachel finished the workshop with an animated quiz on plagiarism before distributing the feedback questionnaire to gather information on what to emphasise more at future workshops. Once again, the Writing Workshop highlighted that the students of the department show a heightened awareness of the dangers not to comply with the rules of academic integrity and a serious desire to avoid plagiarism.
