Dr. Elisheva Barkon and Dr. Naomi Belotserkovsky from the English Language and Literature Department at Oranim attended the meeting of the Education Committee of the Knesset on November 17. The topic on the agenda focused on the state of English in Israeli schools. Elisheva urged that discussions on the level of English also include proficiency of language teachers. She stressed that colleges must take full responsibility in guaranteeing that novice non-native teachers have appropriate language proficiency and shared the rigorous entrance and exit standards introduced at Oranim two years ago. Naomi elaborated on the components of the entrance exam and mentioned the candidates’ problematic performance in basic aspects of English in recent years.
