Being a Freshman in Oranim

by Michal Segal |

My father said to me a few months ago “You’ve just finished the army, done the traditional trip in South America, made a tattoo, and now the next step is to get your education”. Finally, after long searches, I decided that I have a purpose in life and that I want to make a difference in the lives of others. Eventually I made a decision to be a teacher and to start  studying in Oranim, which is best teacher training college. I bought a bag, tried to figure out if the most convenient way to write is a notebook or a laptop, decided to go with the ring binder, and resigned my job. Excited, I waited for the 4 year course to begin.

I remember the first day of school. I came early, found the class and sat next to one of the tables. Everybody was sitting so quietly and I was thrilled to see that I was not the only one who was so nervous that I was unable to talk. Then this very nice lady came into our classroom and introduced herself as our teacher. I remember that one of the things that surprised me was that we were allowed to eat and drink during the lesson, although later I figured out that perhaps I was happy too early because not all the teachers agreed to do this.

After the first lesson I was trying to find the next classroom. This was a major problem in this college and if there is a girl who is reading this and still worries about becoming overweight during the degree-she should relax, because with all the exercises we do here, weight cannot be gained. I couldn’t find the right building and saw one student I remembered from the previous lesson. We started to look for the classroom together, and then one more student joined us, and then another, and another, until at the end there were six of us. This was actually the best way to find friends. We exchanged phone numbers and opened a group on WhatsApp. This has become very helpful because we ask each other different questions and help one another in preparation for tests and quizzes.

So how is it to be a freshman in Oranim College? Overwhelming. Nevertheless, when you have a nice company of friends you can trust and teachers that will not let you down, you can actually like it, and even enjoy the learning process. I am thankful that I have those two elements, I hope that you have them as well, and wish us all happy, valuable and interesting four years.
