Recreating Beauty in the 21th Century: Sarah Bernhardt, Mucha and Me

by: Sophie Bar, the English Department |תמונה שרה

To stay modern and yet recreate someone else’s artwork is, perhaps, the most difficult challenge facing a modern artist; it is certainly the most interesting.

Czech Art Nouveau artist Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939) is often remembered as an artist whose art has been inspired by nature. He used different elements that he had found in nature in order to describe women in special and beautiful ways.

I would like to refer to one of his artworks that I particularly like. It is a poster called Sarah Bernhardt as La Princesse Lointaine, which was designed by Mucha for La Plume magazine in 1897.

The poster was one of seven posters that Mucha designed at the request of the French actress Sarah Bernhardt; she loved them all.

The poster Sarah Bernhardt as La Princesse Lointaine inspired me and I decided to recreate it in my own artistic style.תמונה שרה 2

I believe that in order to be modern and to represent the world as it is today an artist has to use different shades of colors; three shades or less are just not enough.

Thus, whereas in his poster Mucha uses mostly brown shades with a little bit of white and light blue, I use mostly luminous colors, such as blue, pink, orange, and yellow.

As I consider Decorative Illustration to be one of my styles, in this portrait I have tried to combine the illustrative style of a graphic artist with the style of a painter.
